Ch. 9: Fireside Chat

FDR's Fireside Chat 

"Fireside chats" were originally started by President Franklin D. Roosevelt between 1933 and 1944.  They were a series of thirty evening radio addresses as a way for the President to reach out and connect with the citizens of the United States.  It was a way to appeal to the voters.  Although he was really on the radio- not really sitting by a fire- President Roosevelt (FDR) wanted voters to feel as if they were good friends, sitting and chatting by the fire.  

A couple listens to FDR's Fireside Chat in their home.

In the book, President Moon has decided to have his own current "Fireside Chat" through the internet. 

Can you describe how his first fireside chat went?

Chapter 1: A Chance

The Bible upon which President Abraham Lincoln was sworn in for his first inauguration is displayed at the Library of Congress in Washington December 23, 2008. On January 20, 2009, President-elect Obama will take the oath of office using the same Bible Lincoln used.

Due to the small chapter, please address the following 2 questions in your blog entry.

1.  When reading, you are to tune into interesting words.  There are several reasons to pick a word.  It may be a word you didn't know, it may be a word that really made the author's point clear, it may have made you chuckle.  The reasons are endless.

Your job is to write a word that stood out to you and tell why it stood out.

For example: I chose the word resigned, because it was a better word to use than to say he quit; how can you quit something you haven't started yet?  I was also wondering how anyone could turn down the opportunity to be President.

2.  Mrs. Syer's, Judson Moon's pick for Vice President, gave Judson a lot to think about before resigning from the Presidency.  What words of advice did she give that would have been most helpful to you, if you were Judson?  Explain.

Introduction to "The Kid Who Became President"

This blog will be a place of reflection about novels that we read in fifth grade.  It is meant to make you think about what you are reading and discuss your thoughts or opinions on books with your classmates.

Your comments should be kind, polite, and reflective.  It is ok to express your opinion, but please be polite and "Seek First to Understand".  If you comment, your comment must show that you read the book, as well as what you are commenting on.  This means your comments should be thoughtful sentences, not just "Cool" or "I disagree".  Explain what you feel and why. Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. Morter will be reviewing ALL comments before they post, so they will not immediately show up.

Always remember, when you publish to the web, you are on display to the world.  Please remember the following guidelines:

• Use complete sentences.
• Capital Letters where appropriate
• Use punctuation!  
• U R not txting.  Pls DNT Abbreviate! 
• Check ur spelling before you publish. (I hope you caught that one!) 

The first book we will be reading is The Kid Who Became President.  We will read this together in Intervention time.  Occasionally, we may assign some for homework, but this book will be primarily read here at school, so keep your book at school. We will read one or two chapters a day and then you will be asked to respond to a question on the blog (with a THOUGHTFUL) answer!  We need to see proof that you have read!

You will be graded on your blog participation. You must respond to each question posted on the blog (one per chapter).  If you fall behind, you will have to catch up and continue reading and responding on the blog one per chapter. You may also get on this blog at home!

You may also choose to respond to other people's comments, as long as they are thoughtful and worthwhile.  For example, don't just write "Cool".

Instead write something like, "Sally, I thought your comment was cool.  I agree with you.  I also believe that Judson Moon is an excellent candidate for President.  However, I think that it would be silly for a kid to be President.  I mean, what do kids know?"
