The Bible upon which President Abraham Lincoln was sworn in for his first inauguration is displayed at the Library of Congress in Washington December 23, 2008. On January 20, 2009, President-elect Obama will take the oath of office using the same Bible Lincoln used.
Due to the small chapter, please address the following 2 questions in your blog entry.
1. When reading, you are to tune into interesting words. There are several reasons to pick a word. It may be a word you didn't know, it may be a word that really made the author's point clear, it may have made you chuckle. The reasons are endless.
Your job is to write a word that stood out to you and tell why it stood out.
For example: I chose the word resigned, because it was a better word to use than to say he quit; how can you quit something you haven't started yet? I was also wondering how anyone could turn down the opportunity to be President.
2. Mrs. Syer's, Judson Moon's pick for Vice President, gave Judson a lot to think about before resigning from the Presidency. What words of advice did she give that would have been most helpful to you, if you were Judson? Explain.
1. Sharpest was the word that I picked. My brain thinks in weird ways so when I saw the word 'sharpest' I thought of steel and metal. It also made me think of a shiny surface and it made me feel like I had just had a short fall off a cliff. Like I said, my brain is weird.
ReplyDelete2. Mrs. Syers basically told him that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity and told him that this was his chance to make a difference in the world, and also make history. She inspired him by telling him that there had been much worse presidents before him so he couldn't do much wrong.
For the words of advice I agree with you. That's what I did too.

DeletePandemonium, presidency one thing we only get is a few good ones. life is about chances.
ReplyDeleteI think life is about chances too.
DeleteMrs. syres said that you only get once in a lifetime for an opportunity to become the president.
DeletePandemonium I thought it was a long word for uproar.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite word is ''bums'' found on page 8. Mrs. Syers said ''Sweetie, I lived through a lot of politicians. Very smart men. Lawyers. Governors. Senators. A lot of them turned out to be bums. :) I thought that that part was very funny. A good choice of words.
ReplyDeleteThe part that would have helped me would have been ''Believe me, in the rest of your life you're never gonna get another chance like this. Its not too late to change your mind.'' That would motivate me to stay in the election.
The End
I agree with you for the words of advice. I picked that too. ''Bums'' is a funny word.
Delete1. I chose President because it is the most used word in the book. I also used President because I know no one would choose it. It is also the most important person in the world.(Including the United States of America.)
ReplyDelete1.Fist Babe is the word that stood out to me and I think it is funny because it is usually first lady because they are the president's wife, not just a random woman being addressed as babe.
ReplyDelete2. ''thats up to you, moon. The point is you have a chance.".
I think that is funny
DeleteWell I chose the word crippled because it stood out to me. It was the sentence ''She was old now and so crippled by Parkinson's disease that she needed a wheelchair to get around.'' I wonder how old Mrs.Syers really was!! I think the words of advice that she gave to Judson Moon that would help me most was:You got a chance. And believe me, in the rest of your life you're never gonna get another chance like this. In two hundred something years, only forty-two men have had this chance. Moon, all I'm saying is, you should think it over before deciding. It's not too late to change your mind.
ReplyDeleteI agree Natalie because, I just think that Mrs.Syers sounds really nice because she is giving this advice to Judson. She is also making Judson really think about taking the presidency.
Delete1.Mrs.Syers would have been the frist african american to be the frist african american vice president. 2.If I was judson moon and I took advice from Mrs.Syers I would thank about it for a week. Then i would say something to her or the office.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite words were trivia question because, I think that those words are a nice thing to think about. I also think that those words make you think about your life in this chapter because Mrs. Syers said, "You wanna grow up to be a trivia question? Or do you want to make a difference in this world?"
ReplyDeleteIf I were Judson I think that the most important piece of advice would be, "Child, when I was born, women weren't even allowed to vote yet. At your age, I couldn't eat in a restaurant where white folks ate. I lived through the Depression. My husband died fighting in World War II. And I lived long enough to almost become Vice-President. I seen a lot of changes in my life. I learned a few things along the way." I think that Mrs. Syers gave some pretty good advice to Judson because, I think that Judson should have accepted the presidency. But thats just me.
Wow Calee that a lot of typing and I agree on the second paragraph.
DeleteThank you Libby, I believe that those words are great words of advice also.
DeleteThe word I chose was pandemonium because I don't know the meaning of it maybe chaos? Some good advice she gave to him is life is about chances because I would take the chance of being president not just give up on all the work I did to get this far.
ReplyDeleteI choose Parkinson's disease because I have not heard of this disease before.
ReplyDeleteI also liked '' MOON WINS'' to '' MOON WINS . . . AND QUITS!''
ReplyDelete2. I think the special words I would need would be please become president, because almost everyone that you would choose would be the first for a lot of "White House Records."
ReplyDeleteThe words that caught my eye was when he said he had chosen a girl to be his first babe. The words that would have been most helpful would have been when Mrs.Syer said one thing i learned is that life is about chances. We only get a few good ones. When a good one comes your way you got to grab it or live with the fact that you didn't.
ReplyDeleteThe word that stood out to me was "fire alarm" because I think he should have used a different word like there was an actual fire.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you izzy
Delete1.The word I liked was pandemonium because I never heard that word and I don't know what the word means and I like to learn new words and know their meanings. 2.If Mrs.Syer said "child when I was born women weren't even allowed to vote yet" before resigning I were to agreed with her and probably not resign.
ReplyDeleteYou gotta grab the good chances. Or live with the fact that you didn't.
ReplyDeleteI think that the word that stood out the most was the word podium. I think that it's a really fun word to say. I think the best advice she gave was that when a good chance comes your way,you gotta grab it or live with the fact that you didn't.
ReplyDeleteAlot of time because it's not that easy to just say yes to being presedant so if i were him i would most likely say no because i don't know enything about being presedant.
ReplyDeleteThis did not answer the question above.
DeleteI chose senators because it is a interesting word.I think the most helpful advice is when a good chance comes your way you got grab it or live with it that you did not
ReplyDeleteI think that the word that I like the best is Crippled . I think it a good word because instead of saying wrinkled and old the author used the word crippled. The best piece of advice was '' You should think it over before deciding it is not to late to decide.

ReplyDeleteI chose President because It is basically the most important word in the book, considering it is in the title, and all she had to say to encourage me is please be the President , I want to be famous! And make me feel guilty, with puppy eyes. ( Only if she had light blue eyes. :)
ReplyDelete1.Pandemonium would have to be my favorite word from that chapter. It is a much better word instead of crazyness.
ReplyDelete2.I think the best advice from Mrs.Syers would be "Life is about chances, we only get a few good ones. When a good chance comes your way you have to grab it or live with the fat that you didn't.
